AND THE LATEST COVID DEVOLPMENTS IN NY



Most notable ones are per Executive Order 202.14, dated April 7, 2020:

1. Allowing video execution of wills

2. Designation of standby guardian for parents exposed to Covid 19.

3. Tolling extended to May 7

In addition:

1. On April 7, 2020, Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence K. Marks issued a Memorandum with a plan for the Courts to begin handling some non-essential matters beginning on April 13, 2020 by remote access.

2. In response to the increasing volume of essential/emergency matters being brought before the New York City Family Court, the court has increased its number of “virtual” courtrooms from three to five.  The additional courtrooms began operating on April 9.  All virtual courtrooms are presided over by Family Court judges and are limited to addressing the following essential/emergency matters:

  • child protection intake cases involving remand applications
  • newly filed juvenile delinquency intake cases involving remand applications and modifications of such orders
  • family offense petitions requesting temporary orders of protection
The court is also reviewing on submission the following: orders to show cause requesting emergency relief, and stipulations.

3. For those law students, etc., seeking admission, each Department of the Appellate Division will soon be resuming the admission process thathad been paused due to the present public health crisis. Virtual admission ceremonieswill be conducted for eligible candidates. Character and fitness interviews may also bewaived or conducted virtually.
